Some thoughts on AI
Why AI is not even close to the human mind.
AI is not even close to human-level thinking.
Yes, it may be powerful, it may out-compete us in many realms, but not in creativity.
We do not understand the human mind completely, not even close, so, by what measure could we claim AI is more intelligent?
In fact, the human mind may be non-computational. That is, our thinking may not be only the result of neurons firing, like transistors. It may be that each neuron operates like a computer on its own, maybe even like a quantum computer!
In this way, the mind would turn out to be exponentially more powerful than we believe.
Computers just process information, no matter how complicated that process may be. But we don’t understand how the brain works, at least not completely.
Our minds may be less like a computer, and more like a vast internet of billions of quantum computers, the neurons.
Now, this is all mere speculation, but it is very interesting to wonder about the fundamental reality of concsiousness.
As Naval Ravikant pointed out, true intelligence requires understanding. It requires knowing that we know. Otherwise, we’re not talking about intelligence, but computational power.
Plus, even though AI might seem intelligent and creative, it hasn’t created or understood anything yet. It has had no original ideas of its own. The images and music it creates are based on re-combining existing material. It can only paint a painting in the style of Van Gogh because Van Gogh existed in the past.
Now, my personal feeling is this: the human mind and the conscious experience are unimaginably deeper than we think. Take psychedelics once, and you’ll clearly see that reality is not straightforward at all, for example.
AI can still be useful, dangerous, revolutionary; but it can’t be us.
